A | Kuala Lumpur, Oct 10 (UNI) Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the dissolution of the country's parliament on Monday, paving the way for national elections which must be held in the next 60 days.

In a televised speech, Ismail Sabri said he had received the consent of the country's King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah in accordance with the country's constitution.

Ismail Sabri said the past years have seen several unprecedented developments after the national elections in 2018, including political uncertainties with the changes of several prime ministers and the Covid-19 pandemic, which together have harmed the country's socio-economic and political situation.

"With this announcement, the mandate will be returned to the people. The people's mandate is a powerful antidote for the country to restore political stability and create a government which is firm, stable and respected after the elections," he said.

The date of polling day is yet to be announced by the Election Commission of Malaysia. Normally, a general election should be held no later than two months after the dissolution of the parliament. Voters will elect the 222-member Dewan Rakyat, or the House of Representatives.

The possibility of national elections have been hotly discussed over recent months with United Malays National Organization (UMNO), the biggest party in the ruling coalition, calling for elections to end the political uncertainty which has seen two prime ministers appointed since 2020 following the resignation of former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad in February of that year.

Muhyiddin Yassin was sworn in as the prime minister on March 1, 2020 but later resigned following the withdrawal of support by members of parliament from his own coalition. Ismail Sabri was then appointed as the prime minister on August 21, 2021.

이재명 대통령이 "중앙정부와 지방정부는 국민 삶의 개선과 국가의 지속적 발전이라는 시대적 소명을 함께 짊어진 동반자이자 운명 공동체"라며 힘을 모아달라고 당부했다.이 대통령은 이날 청와대에서 주재한 중앙지방협력회의에서 "더 많은 주민참여, 더 굳건한 광역연대, 더 빠른 행정혁신이 함께 어우러지는 새로운 지방자치 시대를 준비해 가야 되겠다"며 이같이 밝혔다.이 대통령은 "국민들 일상에 매우 크고 밀접한 영향을 미치는 지방자치가 건강해야 민주주의도, 지역발전도, 국민 삶의 실질적 개선도 가능하다"고 짚었다. 그러면서 새로운 지방자치 시대를 위해 "강력한 국토균형발전 정책이 추진돼야 한다"고 강조했다."서울을 비롯한 수도권은 지나치게 과밀화 돼 폭발위기를 겪고 있고 지방은 반대로 소멸위기를 겪고 있어서 국가 전체의 효율성이 저하되고 국가경쟁력도 잠식되고 있다"는 것.특히 이 대통령은 "이런 측면에서 3대 메가프로젝트로 상징되는 초격차 전략 산업의 다극화는 전국이 더불어 발전하는 모두의 성장시대를 여는 열쇠가 될 것으로 믿는다"면서 함께 하자고 했다.이에 대해 이 대통령은 "중앙정부는 3대 메가프로젝트와 함께 지방주도성장을 뒷받침할 차세대 전략산업 육성에도 총력을 기울이고 있다"며 "5극 3특을 중심으로 산업과 일자리를 키우고 주거와 교육, 복지 등의 정주 여건 개선 지원에도 만전을 기하겠다는 말씀을 드린다"고 설명했다.이어 "이러한 모든 과제를 중앙정부 혼자 힘만으로는 할 수 없다"라며 "서로 긴밀하게 소통하고 협력하면서 대한민국의 더 나은 미래를 설계해 나가길 진심으로 바란다. 중앙과 지방이 원팀이 돼 '대체불가 대한민국', 국민 모두가 행복한 대한민국을 함께 손잡고 만들어 가면 좋겠다"고 밝혔다.한편, 이날 회의는 새롭게 출범한 민선 9기 지방정부와 처음으로 한 자리에 모이는 자리로, 박찬대 대한민국시도지사협의회장(인천광역시장)을 비롯한 시도지사와 조재구 대한민국시장군수구청장협의회장(대구 남구청장), 남종섭 대한민국시도의회의장협의회장(경기도의회 의장) 등이 지방정부를 대표해 참석했다.회의에서는 '민선 9기 중앙-지방 협력 방안'(윤호중 행정전부 장관), '지방 주도 성장 추진 방안'(임기근 국무조정실장), '3대 메가프로젝트 연계 권역별 성장엔진 육성방안'(김정관 산업통상부 장관), '지방균형성장을 위한 재정투자방향'(박홍근 기획예산처 장관) 등이 보고될 예정이다.특히 16개 시도지사가 지역별 여건과 강점을 반영한 '지방정부 차원의 지방주도 성장 성공전략'을 발표하고 이를 토대로 한 자유토론도 진행하기로 했다.。
